Born in the Republic of Landis with his twin brother, Noah, Basch fled to Dalmasca and joined its militant forces shortly after the conquering of his homeland at the hands of the Archadian Empire. At Nalbina Fortress, Basch led the defense against Archadia and, when in a turn for the worst Prince Rasler was critically wounded, he loyally carried him from the battlefield. When Archadia took over, he and Vossler led an assault on Nalbina Fortress to save King Raminas only to be captured by Imperial forces. As part of Vayne’s plot to frame Basch, he had Noah — more commonly known as Gabranth — pose as Basch and assassinate the king.

As a result of being framed for the king’s murder, Basch is now regarded by the Dalmascans as a traitor, and was declared executed by Marquis Halim Ondore IV immediately following the king’s death. This is a fallacy, however, as Basch was actually imprisoned in the Nalbina Dungeons by Vayne as a means of ensuring Ondore’s loyalty to the Empire. If Ondore betrays the Empire, all Vayne has to do is announce Basch’s continued survival to destroy his credibility to his people.

By pure happenstance, Basch is eventually freed and joins the resistance, vowing to protect Ashe and help her fight for Dalmasca’s freedom.

36-year-old Basch was a captain in the Order of the Knights of Dalmasca. A veteran of many battles, he was once considered a brave and valiant knight, until an inexplicable event led to him being branded a traitor to his country. However, there may be more to him than meets the eye.

Basch first joins the party as a guest character, and later becomes a permanent member once the Sword of the Order (obtained from Old Dalan) has been handed over to Azelas, alias Vossler.

As can be expected from a Knight, Basch is a formidable fighter. His max HP and Strength stats rise faster than those of most characters. Equip him with armour with high Defence and Evade stats, and allow him to attack with weapons that are influenced by Strength, such as Swords, Spears or Poles. A suitably-attired and well-armed Basch can inflict devastating amounts of damage, but bear in mind that he is not an archetypal “tank”-style character — Vaan, with his higher Vitality and Speed stats, is better equipped to bear the brunt of enemy attacks. Even though Basch is best used as a melee fighter, note that it’s advisable to equip him with healing Magicks for emergency situations. If necessary, feel free to have him learn Quickenings early on in order to give his max MP a significant boost.

A Dalmascan knight and captain once celebrated as a gallant and brave hero, Basch shocked the realm two years ago when he assassinated his own king on the eve of a treaty-signing with Archadia. Though public records say he was executed for treason, in truth Basch yet lives, imprisoned deep in the dungeons.

SPOILER:
It was Basch’s devotion to honor — despite everything that happened to them and their homeland — that most puzzled his twin, Gabranth/Noah, and was the source of division between the two of them. Eventually coming to respect Basch’s perspective more than his own, Gabranth makes a final attempt to redeem himself by remaining true to Larsa and assisting in one of the party’s final battles against Vayne. After the battle, as Gabranth/Noah is dying, he asks Basch to protect Larsa in his place and help ensure peace throughout Ivalice. In the end, Basch obliges his brother’s wishes by cutting his hair and assuming Gabranth’s identity, standing beside the new Emperor: Larsa Solidor.
